MARIE-JOËLLE ZAHAR (Lebanon/Canada – Process Design & Power-sharing / as of June 2024), has long experience in supporting mediation processes in different contexts. While on previous assignment with the SBT (2013-2015), she supported the Algerian-led Malian peace process, and the UN-led Geneva talks on Syria. She also supported the development of a reconciliation strategy and the Bangui national dialogue in CAR, and national dialogue efforts in Libya. In 2017, she supported the Civil Society Support Room established by the Special Envoy for Syria. She has also engaged in the delivery of peacebuilding programming in Iraq, Sudan, and South Sudan. Marie-Joëlle has also (co-)designed and facilitated programs to train women mediators in West Africa, as well as participants in the UN High-Level Mediation Course. A professor of political science at the Université de Montréal, she has published widely on power-sharing, engaging with armed actors, and inclusivity in peace processes. Marie-Joëlle is a 2023-2026 Fellow of the Pierre-Elliott Trudeau Foundation and a non-resident Senior Expert with IPI. She speaks English, Arabic and French.
