Security Council Resolution 1633 (2005): The situation in Côte d’Ivoire
This Security Council resolution from 21 October 2005, endorses the decision made by the African Union (AU) and the Security Council pertaining to the Presidential Elections. According to the Pretoria Peace Agreement of 6 April 2005 elections were originally scheduled to the 30 October 2005. The impossibility of organizing the elections led to the following decisions: to allow President Gbagbo to remain in power for a maximum of twelve months after his term ended (October 2006); to appoint a new Prime Minister acceptable to all parties to exercise executive powers; to establish a road map that will be supervised by an International Working Group monitoring the peace process and assist the Government of Côte d’Ivoire in implementing the peace process; to establish a day-to-day Mediation Group composed of the Secretary-General's Special Representative in Côte d'Ivoire, Secretary-General's High Representative for the elections, ECOWAS and the AU; to call on the AU and the Security Council to impose sanctions against individual who violate the peace agreement and block implementation.
