Chapultepec Agreement

This comprehensive agreement concluded the peace process in El Salvador. It deals with the comprehensive reform of the armed forces, civilian police, justice system, electoral system, economic and social arrangements, land and property issues. The agreement also includes provisions for the political participation of the FMLN and for a final ceasefire with  the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration of the armed groups.

The Act confirms that all outstanding issues have been resolved and sets the date for the signing of the final agreement in Mexico City on 16 January 1992.

This agreement establishes a timetable for the negotiations and sets the date for the start of the formal ceasefire as 1 February 1991. It also states that if negotiations are not successful by the stipulated date that the parties agree to accept a UN solution to the outstanding issues.
