This ceasefire agreement, signed on 13 January between the two western-based rebel movements who had not been part of the October 2002 ceasefire agreement, the Mouvement populaire ivoirien du Grand Ouest (MPIGO) and the Mouvement pour la Justice et pour la paix (MJP) as well as the Ivorian government paved the way to the peace talks in France later in January 2003 (Linas-Marcoussis Agreement).

This comprehensive agreement provides the power-sharing formula and the transitional arrangements until elections are held. A transitional period of 24 months is established during which state institutions are to be established. The Agreement renews the commitment of the parties to the cessation of hostilities and calls for the establishment of an international committee to monitor implementation of the agreement.
